Thermal Energy Device Research Team
OHTA Michihiro
Technologies for optimal heat control still have a way to go compared to electricity. This area is promising from both academic and engineering perspectives. Thermal energy often goes to waste and is released to the environment unused. We are conducting a wide range of research on thermal energy technologies to utilize smartly heat, including “Mottainai” waste heat. By fully utilizing heat, we will help promote the efficient use of energy.

We are called Team FINDER (Fundamentals of Ionic Devices Research Team). We specialize in unraveling the behavior of ions and electrons through electron microscopy and related techniques. By uncovering hitherto unseen phenomena, we hope to contribute to the realization of an exciting zero-emission society, as shown on the cover picture of this brochure.

We are exploring the possibilities of artificial photosynthesis with the aim of expanding solar energy utilization technology. In addition to existing ideas for the economical hydrogen production methods, such as integrating it with electrolysis or simultaneous production with valuable products, we are also focusing on creating new methods of artificial photosynthesis utilization. In order to improve the solar energy conversion efficiency, we will not only conduct trial and error in actual experiments, but also collaborate with members who are skilled in theoretical interpretation such as computational science. We will also focus on developing methods that utilize robotic equipment and AI. We look forward to hearing from you if you would like to join us in solving these difficult problems!

We have carried out monitoring and modeling studies for atmospheric environments. Our long-term observations of atmospheric components, e.g. forest CO2 observations since 1993, are useful for evaluate climate change impact on carbon cycles. Our state-of-the-art urban climate-building-energy model makes it possible to evaluate climate change impact on various social problems such as increases of heatstroke and energy consumption. By utilizing these techniques, we will contribute to evaluate the technologies for Carbon Neutral.
